They’re (re)introduced at three parties in three weeks—literary affairs with crisp white wine in plastic cups where boys in vintage tweed and threadbare tees, boys named Jonathan or Topher or Daniel, think dissecting their book proposals is the same as flirting—and she laughs a little harder each time, holds his hand in hers a little longer. He makes jokes about fate and brick walls—the kind you run into again and again and again—until she cuts him off. ‘Do you want to go to dinner sometime?’ she asks. ‘With me?’
